Kayak Hipster - Tips, Gear and Kayak-Related Rants

Luke Rovner - Kayak Hipster Luke is a sea kayak instructor, with a focus on rolling and more recently, traditional paddling. He combined his experience as a photo and video professional with his love of kayaking and started Kayak Hipster, with the goal of capturing outdoor adventures and sharing kayaking tips.

I'm often asked about the difference between types of kayaks. Since I own both Rec and Sea kayaks, I thought this could be a good overview with actual demonstrations of each of their features as well as why each is used in their specific locations.

Outfitter of the Month - White Squall

In 1985 White Squall was born. Our vision then, which remains today, is simple: share our love of paddling and the outdoors with others. For over 30 years, paddlers of all ages and levels have experienced the joy of paddling with us in and around the 30,000 Islands – the largest freshwater island archipelago in the world. Our paddling grounds are part of the Georgian Bay Biosphere Reserve – a designated UNESCO World Heritage Site and are home to white pines, glacier smooth granite and the sparkling waters of Georgian Bay. Sea kayakers the world over recognize the 30,000 islands as some of the best paddling in the world. We’re darn lucky to have this as our backyard, and we look forward to sharing it with you!

Trip Recommendation - Shores of Killarney

In one of our perennial trip favourites, you’ll experience the beautiful and rugged inlets along the southern shore of Philip Edward Island. This area is ranked by several international canoe and kayak magazines as one of the one of the top ten paddle destinations in the world. On this longer trip, you’ll paddle through history with the stark beauty of the Killarney mountains on shore and the sparkling vastness of Georgian Bay and the Outer Limestone Islands on the other. Depending on the weather, we often detour out to the Fox, Hawk and Green Islands. It’s no surprise that the rugged and raw beauty of the area was a source of inspiration for the Group of Seven. We feel inspired each time we explore here, and hope you will, too.
